ヘイトアシュベリーHaight Ashbury

街中に影を落とすように佇む、使われなくなった廃屋を、１階はカフェ・工房、2階はシェアスペースへと、街の資産となるような再生を目指したプロジェクトである。これはクライアント自身が、極力自力で廃屋を蘇らせたいと考えた、個人的な思いで始まったものだ。 今まで建築家が介在する余地のなかった「クライアント主体のDIY」に建築家が参加することの価値を考え、「建築家がクライアントのDIYを追走する“行き当たりばったりな“設計と施工」というスタンスをとったのだ。 完成イメージのもと準備し進めていく体系化されたDIYの進め方とは異なり、建築家と施工者がクライアントのDIYの半歩後ろで設計・施工し、デザインコントロールという概念とは全く異なるアプローチで空間を立ち上げていったのである。 資材を最大限活用したいというクライアントの考えを拾い上げ、余った塗料を組み合わせて塗った壁面は、どこかチグハグな構成で断片的ではありながら、その場にあるもの・空間、出来事を設計していった痕跡である。壁一面に製作した本棚の構造材は、解体時に出た端材をクライアントがアップサイクルしたいと集めていたものであり、その思いを立ち上げたその壁面は、その場その場の発見を面白がり、出てきたものを使い倒そうとする施主の信念が投影されたものである。 私たちは、クライアントのDIYという行為を最大限尊重し、そのDIYを追いかけることを設計することで、「無計画さの中に計画」を生み出し、建築家の介在が必要とされていなかったDIYへ、建築家が参加する価値を実証したものである。

This aim of the project is to renovate an abandoned house that is no longer in use, which casts a shadow over the city, into a cafe / workshop area on the first floor and a shared space on the second floor, making it into an asset of the city. This started with the desire of the client himself to revive the abandoned house on his own. Considering the value of architects participating in "client-centered DIY" where there was no room for architects to intervene, "architects to follow and support client's DIY cherishing random design and construction" was the stance we took. Unlike the systematic DIY procedure that prepares and proceeds based on the completed image, the architect and the builder designed and constructed stepping half behind the client's DIY which is a completely different approach from conventional controlled design process. Respecting the client's idea of ​​wanting to make the best use of materials, the wall surface was painted with a combination of surplus paint which looks fragmented and inconsistent, but became a trace of designing things, spaces, and events on the spot. The structural material of the bookshelf made on the entire wall was collected by the client who wanted to upcycle the scraps produced at the time of demolish, and the wall surface projects owner's belief in trying to use up what came out. We respected the client's act of DIY as much as possible, and by following the DIY done by the client, we created a "plan in the unplanned", which demonstrated the value of architect's participation in DIY that did not require the intervention of an architect.
